The dietary fiber supplement most prescribed by doctors: Metamucil Psyllium Fiber Supplement
Metamucil is one of the most well-known fiber supplements on the market (quite possibly directly related to the fact that it is also the fiber most prescribed by doctors). For the same reason, the word Metamucil has practically become a noun referring to most fiber supplements.
“Have you taken your metamucil yet?”
“You mean my Optifiber?”
eh….. you get the idea…
So what is Metamucil?
To the naked eye, Metamucil Psyllium Fiber Supplement is a light orange fibrous powder that you dissolve in some water (or wine if my mother had her way…*) and take as a daily supplement. The foundation of Metamucil is psyllium.
Now what is psyllium and who is it when it is not in your supplement? Psyllium fiber comes from psyllium seed husks. The husk fiber absorbs moisture from the air (similar to a sponge) and this is also why you notice that the Metamucil fiber turns almost gelatinous when mixed with water as it starts absorbing it.
This water absorption quality that allows the fiber supplement powder to expand when it comes into contact with water (and then form a gelatinous paste), allows manufacturers to make the claim that it helps with weight loss or hunger suppression. Essentially your stomach becomes full with this heavy gelatinous fiber (leaving less room for tempting snacks or second helpings.) Luckily Metamucil is not just a pretty face in the world of supplements or a fake diet fad, but actually provides users of the fiber supplement with significant relief from the woes of constipation and irregularity.
*Don’t test this. I am sure it is illegal in some countries to ruin perfectly good wine!

In my opinion, those are a lot of asterisks and footnotes for so few claims, and I would have some hesitation in recommending Metamucil if it wasn’t such a darn effective fiber supplement. The reviews are overwhelmingly positive on Amazon.com and even filtering by negative reviews show concerns mainly with artificial sweeteners and the occasional order/shipping problem. It is like one big fan club!
Metamucil is the first fiber supplement that a doctor prescribed to me and has been my go-to supplement in recent years. There are probably healthier alternatives out there, but it works for me and that is what counts.
Have we found the Alpha and Omega of dietary fiber supplements? Going on the reviews for this product it is quite possibly true. This is definitely one of the most popular digestive supplements in the marketplace and reasonably priced so if you are looking for a reasonable safe option, this is definitely a route to at least try out once.
