What is the best time of day to take dietary fiber?

When starting to take a dietary fiber, many users (like me) are first prescribed some by a doctor. It means the first time that you pick up dietary fiber will probably be from a pharmacy. As is only natural, we want to make sure that we follow the directions and maximize the fiber’s effect. Since dietary fiber is not a medicine that is prescribed to be taken at a specific time of day, when would be the best time to take it?

 

Well here are a few things to consider:

  • It is recommended that you do not take fiber within 2 hours of taking and other prescribed medicines. This is to ensure that it does not negate their effect for whatever condition or purpose they are being taken. You will see this warning on some dietary fiber labels, including Metamucil.
  • If you are taking a fiber supplement that does not have a neutral taste or does not have any added flavorings, you might want to mix it with your morning smoothie. This will essentially dictate the time of day you take your fiber for you but will go a long way to making it taste better.
  • It is highly recommended that you follow up a dose of fiber with at least 8 ounces of water. This will help to ensure that you are not negating any benefits of regularity by having the dryness of fiber powder cause some constipation. Unless you have a super strong bladder, you might not want to take the dose of fiber and water right before bed, so earlier in the day might be the way to go.
  • When I started taking fiber supplements, I would also use it to help suppress my appetite when I was making dinner. This helped me stave off snacking and eventually assisted with weight loss. Metamucil even markets their dietary fiber as and appetite control supplement. It also meant that the perfect time of day for me to take dietary fiber, was right when I arrived home from work.

It might just be a marketing label, but it works.
